Candle Care & Safety

Candle Care & Safety

Your FIFTEEN SCENTS candle is hand-poured with Golden Brands 464 soy wax in a 10 oz opaque matte glass vessel. A little care goes a long way toward a cleaner burn, a longer life, and a better scent experience.

Before You Light

  • Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn — including the very first. A long wick produces excess soot, a tall flame, and uneven melting.
  • Allow a full melt pool on the first burn. Let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the vessel (usually 2–3 hours) before extinguishing. This prevents tunneling and ensures even fragrance release on every subsequent burn.
  • Place the candle on a heat-safe, flat, stable surface away from drafts, vents, and anything flammable.

While Burning

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish before leaving the room or going to sleep.
  • Keep burns to 3–4 hours maximum. Extended burns can cause the vessel to overheat and the wick to mushroom.
  • The glass will get warm. Our matte glass vessels retain heat — always handle with care and never move the candle while lit or immediately after extinguishing.
  • Burn in a well-ventilated space. Open windows or ensure airflow, especially in smaller rooms. Avoid burning in enclosed areas with no air circulation.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets at all times.
  • Do not burn for more than ½ inch of wax remaining at the bottom. Burning past this point risks overheating the vessel and the surface beneath it.

Extinguishing Safely

  • Use a candle snuffer to extinguish — this prevents hot wax from spattering and keeps the wick centered.
  • Avoid blowing the candle out; this can push the wick off-center and create smoke.
  • After extinguishing, re-center the wick while the wax is still soft if it has shifted.

Cold Throw vs. Hot Throw

Cold throw is the scent you detect from an unlit candle — the fragrance diffusing naturally at room temperature. Hot throw is the scent released once the candle is burning and a melt pool has formed.

Soy wax candles, including ours, often have a subtler cold throw compared to paraffin. Hot throw develops fully once a complete melt pool forms across the entire surface of the vessel — this is another reason that first full burn is important. Room size, ventilation, and fragrance sensitivity all affect how strong the throw feels to you.

Pets & Candle Use

We love animals and want you to burn thoughtfully if you share your home with pets.

  • Never leave a lit candle in a room with unsupervised pets. Curious animals can knock candles over or burn themselves on the hot vessel.
  • Ensure ventilation. Burn in a space with airflow and allow pets to move freely to a different area if they choose. Some animals are more sensitive to scented environments than others.
  • Birds are highly sensitive to airborne substances — we recommend not burning candles in the same room as pet birds.
  • If your pet shows signs of respiratory discomfort, extinguish the candle and ventilate the space immediately.
  • We cannot make verified claims about specific fragrance ingredients and pet safety. For ingredient-specific concerns, please consult your veterinarian.

Wick Maintenance

  • Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn.
  • If a mushroom (carbon buildup) forms at the wick tip, let the candle cool completely, then pinch or trim it off before relighting.
  • A properly trimmed wick produces a steady, low flame with minimal smoke or soot. If you see heavy smoke, extinguish, trim, and relight.

End of Candle Life & Vessel Reuse

When about ½ inch of wax remains, it's time to retire the candle. Your 10 oz matte glass vessel is designed to be reused.

To clean the vessel:

  1. Place the vessel in the freezer for 1–2 hours. The remaining wax will shrink and can be popped out cleanly.
  2. Wipe out any residue with a paper towel.
  3. Wash with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly.

The vessel works well as a planter, a small storage container, a pen cup, or a makeup brush holder. We'd love to see how you reuse yours — tag us on social.
